Prioritize building a student's vocabulary to a point that he can integrate better socially.
Marzano's 2010 research continues to show that students comprehend better with vocabulary instruction than without it. ELL's will benefit from learning extra vocabulary descriptions, explanations, examples, & visuals of a word. Teachers should focus on building the vocabulary piece first. ELL's are then able to socialize while using their new found vocabulary skills.
