One strategy I employ frequently is the use of repetition. I teach first grade and during our daily Calendar Math activities, we count to 120 by 10s, 5s and 2s. The student who is leading calendar math points to each number as it is being said, giving all students, and the ELL students in particular, a visual cue of each number in the sequence, helping them to match up the number with its pronunciation in English. She students clap when each number that ends in a zero is said, giving an additional auditory component to the numbers being spoken aloud. I would anticipate speaking the numbers slowly and clearly within close proximity to the ELL students, so that they hear proper pronunciation.
