We began a new story today, "Jazz: The Journey". My co-teacher works with the ELL's to ensure they understand what is being read. I introduced the story. We highlight and brought attention to the academic vocabulary. We analyze the photo on the opening page. I like what the teacher said on the video about the "juicy part" of the text. She describes this as complex structure or academic language text. Our "juicy text" for today's reading dealt with when jazz began & it's origin. The text also told us that the songs rose up from the fields of southern plantations. The juicy text was written on chart paper and the students were to deconstruct that portion of the text.
