I would feel comfortable integrating literacy into the social studies classroom. Students  hear me read text aloud and “think aloud” using primary source documents and visual information. That’s when small group reading instruction takes place, which include sources from history.  When I meet with my students to develop their reading and they’re thinking habits, I use documents from history and also use sources from history. Further, I use books for guided reading instructions that develops students knowledge of history that occur later in the student’s school day. When meeting in small groups, students and I use pieces of informational text while that text should be helping them with their social studies knowledge it should build background, build experience as it should build vocabulary for them.
