Module 6 Discussion: Language and Learning

Name a strategy from the content book in this module: Language and Literacy in All Content Areas.

• One strategy is to present vocabulary in context to connect it to meaning

Describe the strategy as it relates to a specific content area, and/or the content in which you teach.

• Some science vocabulary have different meanings outside of the content like leaves, cell, compound, and root.  Presenting the terms with the context gives the student a basis to connect with the vocabulary.  GIving the words a concrete idea helps the student absorb the terms and meaning.

Detail how the strategy would hypothetically (on a planning level) play out in your classroom. Include what you can anticipate needing to modify and differentiate.

• During planning, I make sure the words are connected to definitions, images, and have many chances for repetition in speaking, hearing, reading, and finally writing the terms.
