Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
As educators, in most instances, we feel it’s our job to “correct” students (especially when it comes to grammar usage). It may make us cringe to hear the English language used incorrectly, however, as long as the student’s receptive language is intact and he or she understands what is being requested/asked, then it is our job to fill in the missing grammar components. With that being said, correcting a student’s grammar is not necessary. But if a student does not understand what is being requested (comprehension) then giving positive feedback would be necessary. Some alternative ways to bring about student awareness for self-correction is through the use of modeling the expected outcome and providing students with visual strategies and/or reminders.
