My “Top 10 High Quality Language Practices” were determined by how much students will be engaged with the content. I believe that students are able to engage with material in a “higher quality way” if they think deeply about it in a way that is best for them individually.

  1. Integrated content across cultures and topics that students find interesting.

  2. Student experts in certain topics teaching one another.

  3. Interactive teaching, not didactic.

  4. Emphasis on inquiry and discovery, not rote memorization.

  5. Quality of understanding over quantity.

  6. Performance-based portfolios over standardized exams.

  7. Using portfolios to determine strengths and strategies for improvement for each individual student.

  8. Guided peer feedback in groups or partners.

  9. Ability to convey knowledge to others, not merely identify or replicate it.

  10. Opportunities for creative expression of ideas in many forms.
