This student sounds like a field-dependent worker to me due to the fact that they work well in their group settings as well as interacting respectfully with and trusting the teacher.  It seems that the best way to move forward with this student would be to make sure there are plenty of opportunities for collaborative work with less competition focused activities but to keep in mind that these activities need to be structured with very clear expectations.
