I would keep the groups small and balance them based on cognition, creativity, learning experiences and reading readiness. I will model group expectation. Changing members around often. While students are in their groups, I will circulate the room and ask the appropriate questions when redirection is necessary. I will also take anecdotal notes while circulating the room to guide future instruction and small group learning with the teacher.
