When working with second language learners, there are several modification considerations that are relevant and specific to their needs. These modifications aim to support their language development, comprehension, and overall academic success. The most important modification is scaffolding. Without scaffolding the ELLs may become extremely frustrated with the task/text and give up on it before ever truly attempting the task.

Two other modification considerations that are important are vocabulary support and cultural sensitivity. It is vital to be mindful of the vocabulary used in classroom materials and instructions and to pre-teach key vocabulary words, provide glossaries, and offer bilingual dictionaries if available.  Creating a culturally inclusive classroom environment that respects and celebrates the diverse backgrounds of second language learners, and that incorporates culturally relevant materials and examples in the curriculum will further ensure engagement with the content by the students. This then facilitates their learning beyond the surface level.
