Feedback Checklist on Brain-Compatible Teaching in regards to ELLs:
- Are the students actively engaged in the lesson? Look for evidence of active participation, such as raised hands, verbal responses, or collaborative group work.
- Are brain-compatible strategies, such as hands-on activities, visuals, and movement, incorporated to enhance engagement and learning?
- Is the teacher using a variety of sensory modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) to present information and instructions?
- Is the teacher differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of ELL students? Look for accommodations, modifications, and scaffolding techniques to support language development and content understanding.
- Are there opportunities for students to work at different levels and paces based on their language proficiency and prior knowledge?
- Is academic language being integrated throughout the lesson? Observe if the teacher explicitly teaches and reinforces key vocabulary and language structures relevant to the content being taught.
- Are language supports, such as sentence frames or word banks, provided to help ELL students express their ideas more effectively?
- Is the classroom environment conducive to learning and language development? Look for a welcoming and culturally responsive classroom setting that values diversity.
- Observe student behavior and body language to assess their level of engagement and comfort in the learning environment. Note any potential signs of frustration, confusion, or disengagement that may require additional support for ELL students.
- Assess whether the brain-compatible teaching strategies are effectively supporting ELL students' learning and progress.
