Mod 3 Discussion: Moving Students Into a New Culture
Module 3 Discussion
The closest I have ever been to experiencing culture shock is when I went to Cuba on a mission trip. The town where we were staying had been hit by a hard storm (not a tropical storm or hurricane) the week before and the water processing station was down. The lack of potable water and the necessity of going to several stores every morning to find bottled water for the day was not something I ever experienced before. We had to be careful to shower with our mouths closed, brush our teeth with bottled water, and ration what bottled water we did have each day to make it last because the water coming out of the pipes wasn't drinkable.
The implications for my own classroom is that my students may not be used to all the resources available to them because of shortages in their own countries. I need to ensure that all my students are aware of what is available to them in my classroom and in the school.
