Module 12 Discussion: SIOP

The SIOP protocol is an 8 part lesson development plan.  It starts with Preparation and concludes with Assessment.  The multi faceted plan makes it possible for a classroom teacher to break down the barriers that ELL students face, when language barriers impede learning and understanding.  Essentially, it brings the best research based teaching strategies we know and puts them into play for our ELL population.  

The eight parts to the protocol are Preparation, Building Background, Comprehensible Input, Strategies, Interaction, Practice and Application, Lesson Delivery and Review and Assessment.
