There are many ways to have a student and family feel welcome and included. I try to talk to my class prior to their arrival, remind them to be friendly and also to be including of the new student- they are probably nervous, etc. I do my best to communicate- even if I need to use google translate. If I have a student or multiple students that speak their native language I place them near one another and encourage them to speak to them in both their native language and English. Also, it makes a huge impact if students see books that are either in their language, or are related to their culture!
