When I am informed of a new student coming to my first grade classroom, the first thing I do is Google the native country.  Just because a student speaks Spanish does not mean that their culture is the same as another Hispanic.  I need to know a bit about their culture (eye contact, only speak when spoken to, etc).  I use Google to translate my weekly newsletter to the language of the incoming student and I print several past weeks (if student enters after school has started).  I learn several words that I can use to greet the student in his/her language.  I put cards in their native tongue to identify "table", "door", etc.  This also shows the rest of my students that our new student it important.  I demonstrate visually how to perform classroom routines (put books away, etc.)  I use scaffolding to help the student perform tasks.
