Module 2 Discussion: Theories of Language Learning
Nodule 2 Discussion
I found Krashen's Theory of Language Learning to make the most sense and concepts with which I could identify.
When he talks about the Input Hypothesis and the Natural Approach to language acquisition, I can relate to that. Speaking English and some French, the Natural Approach is most comfortable. When I learned a language in school, unfortunately much of it was drill and practice (the 1980's). While I was able to memorize and do well on tests, my actual use of the language was minimal. I needed to be able to make mistakes, Acknowledging that correct acquisition comes naturally after practice would have changed my whole attitude about studying a world language. Scaffolding will be one technique that I will carry into the classroom. Pushing a ESOL student just beyond their comfort zone will serve them well.
