Reading and the Second Language Learner

In order to facilitate the comprehension and the advanced reading / phonological skills for all students (regular and ELL) I would have to adopt several differentiation strategies.  Most importantly my students would need to be grouped by reading level so that I can do guided reading centers at their appropriate level.  During guided reading, I would build background knowledge and activate prior knowledge, model thinking, use proper comprehension questions, among other strategies.

For the ELL student, I would need to use spontaneous intervention where we intervene without planning.  I would allow the student an opportunity to read and write in their own language in less difficult text at their level.  I would scaffold by chunking the text.  I would provide them with reading material that they are interested in to help in comprehension and vocabulary development.  Of major importance is providing them with reading in their own language at their appropriate level.  I would try to use their culture in the materials I choose as well.   We cannot forgot to provide collaboration with cooperative groups.  This will help them with their confidence.  They can receive peer coaching opportunities.  I would give them free choice for the topic they are reading/writing about.
