Although I do not teach ELA this year, last year I taught the students how to do their own vocabulary flash cards. They can do the flashcard in their own language, then (for those that are learning English) they can put the vocabulary in English and write the meaning. Students are not only learning this, but they can be an encouragement at home and be teaching their parent at the same time. The student becomes the teacher! Reading stories at home also is a way of supporting the language development at home. The student can read to the parent and point to the words they can say in English.
