For the first student who studied in her homeland, I would want to do a survey of exactly what was studied and how much she understands academically, how much is spoken and written, in what language. I would want to know how she feels about her learning and how she learns, whether it would be by visual, lecture, or hands-on.

Although both students would be going through a "culture shock", the second student would most likely be experiencing trauma as well, as she was uprooted when a civil war broke out. Her emotional well-being would be the utmost important, and she might need to be seen by the counselor in the school to help with the transition.   I would want to do a survey with the second student to see how far along she was in her studies, and I would try to scaffold in as much as she would be comfortable with during this time.

Both students I would pair them up with a peer to help them along and I would monitor closely for any signs of being distraught or withdrawn, as this could happen with either student.
