Module 1 Discussion: The Stages of Language Progression

At first glance the most surprising facts about language progression for me was how much culture influences language and language acquistion.  For example age of parents has an effect, as well as gender identity, and spiritual and religous beliefs.

Another surprising fact is that language learners can possess up to 500 words in their receptive vocabulary and still not be able to comprehend because they become tired from attempting to obtain meaning.  

I have three granddaughters under the age of 4 and they all were very verbal at an early stage however, they followed a lot of the same stages as the ESOL students, especially the "NO" stage.  

The last remarkable observtion is that Noam Chomsky is a linguist!  I am a huge fan of his philosophies and was amazed that he is also a brillant linguist.
