I have done lessons similar to this in my classroom using a novel and related nonfiction passages.  One thing I noticed right away was that the students did NOT have copies of the novel and I would make sure they all had a copy to follow along with and use as a reference.  I liked that all students, regardless of ability, had access to the same complex text.  They were all able to read and comprehend it due to the teacher’s scaffolding of the lesson.  By taking the time to explicitly teach the students each strategy she wanted them to do, it allowed the students to feel comfortable enough to try it on their own.  I also appreciated the fact that students were first given time to speak to their partners before responding to the whole group.  This is something that I do frequently in my classroom as well.  Finally, having text that students can relate to and/or are interested in can make all the difference as well when expecting them to interact with and comprehend it.
