The SIOP model involves 8 steps.

- preparation: determining objectives, supplemental materials, needs of students, gathering methods of instruction that will engage all learners

- Building background: make the link between where students have been and where they are going

- comprehensible input: understand your students well enough you are able to communicate effectively when providing learning experiences

- Strategies: be prepared to use a variety of learning strategies to engage students at different levels of proficiency; have scaffolding available to help students gain the mastery that is required of them

- interaction: make use of social constructivism and understanding that we learn best through interactions with others.

- practice and application: be sure students have lots of opportunities and different ways to practice what they are learning and apply it to a larger context

- lesson delivery: maximize student engagement by having the students active most of the time during the learning process

- assessment: review key vocabulary and concepts on a regular basis, provide feedback to students in a timely manner, use a variety of assessment strategies while also preparing students for the high stakes testing they will be involved with
