If I had a family of new students from a country with divergent cultural beliefs I would use it as a teaching/learning opportunity.  When people don't have any information about other cultures, they make judgements or jump to conclusions which are commonly misconceptions.  I would ask the student(s) to teach us or share with us information about their family/culture; almost like a show and tell.  That way, the other students would learn what is important to the new student(s).  Students could ask questions and the students would have the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions in a safe and structured way.
