Teaching preposition through Art

Prepositions are a difficult concept for ALL elementary school students, especially ELLs.  I know that for the past 2 years that I have taught 5th grade, it is always challenging subject.

In this video, prepositions are taught using an art piece.  Students will observe the art piece and make statements about objects in regards to their prepositional relationship.  For example, the tea pot on the saucer.  After establishing several prepositional relationships, they can share them with each other.  If the ELLs are doing this as partners, they feel confident when they speak to their collaborative partner.  There is also a handout that goes along with this activity where there is a sentence framework.  Several different correct answers are acceptable.  I think that I will utilize this activity, not only for the ELL students in my class, but for ALL students.   Art has no language barrier.  Students feel confident when they look at a piece of art because they can also understand it in their native language.
