Module 18 Video/Resource Discussion
Video/Resource Discussion
In both videos, it was clear that teachers had previously used and practiced the strategies to teach academic vocabulary. It is important to teach and use the strategies consistently so that students incorporate them into their individual learning patterns. In the example of the Frayer model, the teacher structured the exercise so that all students spoke in a class discussion, and they had sentence starters to engage with each other respectfully and purposefully. The students collaborated to build a definition, examples, and non-examples of the word "resilience," which was a meaningful way to establish understanding of academic vocabulary. In the video about scientific and academic vocabulary, the teacher modeled how to decode words by breaking them down into component parts, and gently pushed students to use the academic terms rather than colloquial terms. She anticipated the language that would be more comfortable for them to use, and guided their pronunciations so that they grew comfortable with scientific terms.
