Module 1: Goals for This Course and Thoughts About Article

Through this course I want to learn how to connect to my students in meaningful ways, especially those who come from a cultural background that is different from myself. I want to learn how to be an effective and just teacher to ELLs.

Utt's article raises important issues that all teachers need to hear, understand, and act upon. I need to do the work of analyzing biases I hold. I need to learn how to approach my students and their families with humility and ask for their concerns, desires, values regarding their own education and how it might impact their community.
