In the early elementary grades, we have always encourage parents to read to their children in their native language because it will increase their cognitive development. Homework is always a struggle because parents typically cannot read it therefore cannot help their child. Making sure students understand their homework before they leave and not giving them something they will struggle with as opposed to build on. Having a class newsletter with pictures so they can see their child at work and they feel a part of what is going on. Hosting literacy nights with bilingual support if possible. There is always some form of volunteering the school can provide that makes them feel welcome and comfortable.
