If I received a new student from a country with very divergent cultural beliefs some of the methods I would use to alleviate cultural miscommunications would be to 1st become aware of the students cultural norms and know some different ways to ease the student into participating in the classroom for the purpose of learning.  I would also make sure that the new students as well as the rest of the class are aware of my classroom expectations for routines, behavior, work in class and homework.  I have the class schedule posted as well as other visuals for assignments.  I think providing different ways for the student to interact with content is also important.  Having students work with partners, in small groups and at times independently provides different opportunities for practice within the classroom.
