1. Build on students’ background knowledge

2. Use graphic organizers and thinking maps

3. Use clear, explicit directions

4. Use visuals to enhance instruction

5. Use native language to build connections (if possible)

6. Use reading, writing, and listening in all content areas to create a language rich environment

7. Use peers to guide discussions

8. Explicitly teach vocabulary in all areas

9. Formatively assess students throughout units

10. Provide small group support to students

These activities would be high quality because they provide enhanced support to all students, take background knowledge and native language into consideration.
