Pictures walks are very effective and we always start with those. We use the pictures to hypothesize what will be happening and even what the story is about, the problem in the story and the outcome.

I would introduce vocabulary and would differentiate by using pictures for the vocabulary also.

Purposely pairing my students would be another strategy knowing who would compliment the other.

In these pairs we would do shared reading and realouds with me pausing to think aloud what I might be hypothesizing about the story.
