When regrouping students, I think grouping with data is the best option. That being said, regrouping students as late in the year as May, that may not work out as well. May can be hellacious; students are burnt out, they've decided who they do and don't like, and they can honestly be downright cruel to each other. At least where I teach (a middle school), anyway. In this case, I would hold my students to a high expectation of respect in the classroom and instill cooperative learning social roles. To me, this is the best answer for antsy preteens right before summer.
