Adding differentiated instruction is key to reaching each student in a classroom like this one. At the beginning of the year, using a program like Exact Path or looking at students' PM1 scores is a great way to gauge where a student is and what their strengths/weaknesses are. That is, until you get to know your students a little better through experience with them. Using data is still very important, but not as important as knowing your students. Compacting is a strategy that would more so be used in an advanced classroom, while interest centers/ interest groups would be better suited for this classroom in the scenario.
