For my own goals and work with my students, responding to their varied needs for instructional support is most important to me. My why for becoming a teacher is to create safe, uplifting spaces that support children in learning to love to read. Curtailing instruction to meet their needs is largely how one does that. Of course, I also find it important to align with state standards, but I truly believe that it is easier for students to meet those standards when they love reading.
