As a 6th-grade ELA teacher, I regularly use formative assessments in my teaching. One I regularly already use that I sa discussed in a video was the thumbs up, thumbs down method when checking for understanding. I like this method, but there are always going to be some students who may not feel comfortable displaying to everyone a thumbs down (that they don't understand the material).

A new criterion-based assessment I'd like to introduce to my classroom next year is more student-engaged assessments. These create more room for self-reflection and community building in the classroom. When it comes to ELL students, or really all students, I believe, there is more success in a low-anxiety and supportive environment. I think the student-engaged assessments can help to create these environments and better learning opportunities.
