The most important criterion for my curriculum goals is III. Responding to students’ varied needs for instructional support. In my work with students, especially English Language Learners, instruction must be differentiated to meet a wide range of language proficiency levels, backgrounds, and learning needs. Even when lessons are aligned to standards, they are only effective if students can actually access and engage with the content.

Responding to varied needs ensures that all students can participate in rigorous, grade-level learning through appropriate scaffolds such as visuals, sentence frames, modeling, and flexible grouping. It also allows me to adjust instruction in real time based on formative assessment data and student understanding.

While alignment, standards shifts, and assessment are all essential, differentiation is what makes those elements meaningful in practice. Without it, students who are still developing English proficiency may be left behind despite being in a standards-based curriculum.
