Mod 9 Discussion: Oral Language Support in My Classroom
Module 9 discussion
One key principle I gained from this module is the importance of social interaction in engaging students in meaningful academic discussion. Comprehension deepens when students are consistently exposed to opportunities for collaborative interaction in the classroom. Additionally, asking thoughtful questions and showing interest in students’ ideas encourages them to elaborate, which further supports language development.
Small‑group collaboration is also beneficial for ELL students because it promotes socialization, reduces anxiety, and provides a supportive environment for practicing academic language. Applying different structured discussion strategies, such as buzz groups and informal debates, are effective ways to increase social interaction in the classroom. Buzz groups allow students to exchange ideas informally within a short time frame, making them an excellent warm‑up activity before whole‑class discussion. Informal debates, on the other hand, give students the opportunity to express their viewpoints on a topic and help them develop critical thinking, persuasive communication, public speaking, and teamwork skills.
