Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
Student misspeaking
- Why, and for what purpose does this serve?
- Suggest some alternative ways to bring about student awareness for self-correction
I think putting yourself in the mindset that you should be refraining from correcting second language learners in a classroom setting might be a mistake. It is more a case of discerning what needs to be clarified for the speaker - and perhaps the other student(s).
As a teacher you are always in a position to correct students whether they are second language learners or natural English speakers. Paraphrasing is an excellent way to not only clarify for all students but to demonstrate how to more effectively, or correctly, state situation, response or question. It serves to educate the entire classroom.
