With ELL’s just like any other student it is important to make sure that we make sure the reading is entertaining for our students because if the reading is not entertaining, then they will not read it, and they will feel bored. Including, reading materials that have humor or bringing reading materials to life in the real world is probably one of the best options for a student, including ELL’s to be able to make connections that they can understand. While our student may be able to comprehend and decode the words itself, it doesn’t mean that they’re comprehending the concepts of what is going on in the passage. One on one reading helps a lot with this struggle because then conversations can be had among students who are reading the same material. In my experience I have found that bringing things to real world life and having true real life conversations about texts allows for ELL to make connections and understand what they’re reading a lot better. It also allows them to make those connections when they read on their own for future reading passages.
