My planning process for this part of the assignment was to consider the demands of the standard along with my students cultural and ability levels.  A concern of mine is that students won't annotate or take away the key details/aspects that will help them identify how text structure/features contribute to the meaning of a text.

The thing that took the most thought was planning for the cultural and linguistic bias as well as the culture as a factor in ELL.  It's a little tricky for me because I want to make sure that I plan and prepare to help my ELL students but I haven't taught this benchmark before, so I have to rely on what I know about teaching ESOL/ELL students plus what I know about the benchmark to make the best judgment call about how to proceed with planning the lesson.

Outcomes for students are:

  1. they will be able to identify how text structure and text features contribute to the meaning of texts
  2. that they will understand the meaning of figurative language and unknown words and how they contribute to the meaning of texts.
