I would want to help build the student up socially rather than building their vocabulary to help them socialize. The text clearly states that "group work builds skills on all levels - reading, writing, listening, speaking, and as teachers we should help them develop each interactively." Trying to build the student vocabulary up first might help in the short term, and indeed I would prioritize it if an individual student was prooving particularly antisocial- but that is moving the goal post from acquisition to learning as discussed in the first couple of modules from the course. An excellent middle ground would be to join the various pairs as they perform their tasks to help guide along and monitor the progress and help ask guiding questions from the steps listerd out for teaching vocabulary. A lot of those steps encourage group work, as well a multitude of sources from almost all our modules, and clearly imply the social dimension of the class should be focused on for more effective retention.
