I resonate with your last paragraph as it seems like a sensitive approach but is paired with a compliment in a way that you understood what they were saying. I have taken many years of Spanish and can understand and read a lot of Spanish, however, I'm reluctant to speak it because I know that I'll make mistakes. If I knew that I was able to speak it to someone who would use the technique you described in paragraph 3, I would feel a lot more comfortable speaking Spanish.
