Scenario Response 4
Scenario 4
The student is in the beginning level of writing development. To move the student to an intermediate level of writing development in 4th grade requires an approach that builds foundational skills while gradually introducing more complexity and independence. I would do this through mini lessons and modeling. The scenario states that the student writes in one or two short sentences to express a single idea and the ideas are there but not logically sequenced. I would focus on content first and prioritize getting ideas down. Having a relatable topic or topic of interest is important to beginning writers. Allowing beginning writers to write about something they like or know promotes personal expression, reflection and discovery. From there I would establish writing routines to increase comfort and confidence and later focus on conventions. Throughout the stages of this process I would be sure to provide students with a variety of resources for planning and organizing drafts that they can refer back to while working independently.
