One strategy I could use is having a home group or buddy group for my ELL students making sure I include one other student that speaks that child’s home language. This helps students build a relationship and feel confident when responding to things in the classroom.

Another strategy, that I already like using, is calling students randomly. I usually use popsicle sticks or a name picker online. That will randomly pick a student. This makes it so that all students are paying attention. They have to know where we are at and what we are discussing so that if they are called on they can answer. Now if I have a student who seems to not be able to answer the question correctly I will call on a buddy who can help them with the answer. This keeps students engaged and having critical learning moments in the classroom.
