Mod 20 Discussion: Goals for This Course Revisited
At the beginning of this course, I set the following goals:
-
Gain practical strategies to better support English Language Learners (ELLs) in my classroom.
-
Learn how to modify curriculum and instruction to align with Florida State Standards while still meeting ELLs where they are.
-
Improve my ability to communicate with and involve ELL families in the learning process.
Looking back, I can confidently say that all three goals were met — and even exceeded — in meaningful ways.
-
Through the course modules, I learned about scaffolding, Total Physical Response (TPR), SIOP strategies, and differentiation techniques that I can apply immediately with my ELLs. These tools will help me be more intentional in how I plan and deliver instruction.
-
I now feel much more confident in modifying curriculum and assessments while maintaining alignment with the FSS. The guidelines and templates provided helped me think critically about how to adapt texts, tasks, and assessments for various language levels.
-
Finally, the modules on family involvement and culturally responsive teaching gave me insight into how to build stronger partnerships with families from diverse backgrounds. I plan to apply strategies like bilingual communication, face-to-face connections, and family literacy support next school year.
This course not only met my goals — it helped shape a more inclusive and thoughtful approach to teaching all learners.
