After reading through some of the other participants responses to see their perspectives, I have to agree with building academic language. Building academic language could be beneficial across all subjects. For example in writing, students must know how to respond to a prompt whether its fiction, non-fiction, a memoir, or a speech. In math students will need to understand academic language to understand the rules of math. For ELLs this is especially important to "promote success in literacy and English language acquisition." For example, in reading the use of context clues is important for ELLs (and any other student) who doesn't know the meaning of a word. They can take an educated guess as to what it may mean. In social studies, academic language would be words like "grievance" or "violate". In math, they use words like "decompose" and "reciprocate." Knowing the meaning of these words in subject specific content can help in other subjects as well.
