When using sentence starters or sentence frames, I think about how they can be adapted to pair with word cards. In order to have successful academic discussion with ELLs we can talk about where we think the correct word cards go in order to fill in the sentence. By having a tangible activity students can practice filling and rearranging sentences. We can discuss with the class whether they agree or disagree until we get the correct sentence. This is effective because it helps to scaffold from individual words or segments to understanding full sentences.
