In this scenario, I would focus on building the student socially in order to help them gain better mastery over new vocabulary. Social interaction provides real, meaningful contexts for language use, and research shows that authentic communication with peers significantly boosts vocabulary acquisition for ELLs. By strategically pairing the student with a supportive, bilingual peer and creating low-pressure opportunities for collaboration—like shared tasks, games, or discussion starters—they can build confidence using new words in natural conversation. This social growth lays the foundation for vocabulary development that sticks, because it’s tied to connection and purpose rather than memorization alone.
