Step 1: Understand the Student’s Cultural Background

• Gather Information from Families and Cultural Experts: Speak with the student’s family or caregivers to learn about cultural norms, values, communication styles, and possible stressors the student may be experiencing due to cultural transition. If possible, involve community leaders or individuals familiar with the student's culture to provide insight.

 Step 2: Create a Trusting, Safe, and Inclusive Environment

• Develop Cultural Rapport: Build a relationship with the student by acknowledging and respecting their cultural identity. Be patient, compassionate, and show understanding of their transition. Having a culturally sensitive teacher or mentor who can interact with the student in a welcoming way is crucial.

Step 3: Conduct Culturally Informed Observations

• Observe Behavior in Context: Look beyond behaviors that may seem problematic.
