Checklist for Curriculum

 

Cultural relevance

1. Do the materials and the curriculum reflect the lived experiences and varied cultural backgrounds of the students?

2. Do the materials and the curriculum provide background context for any gaps in the lived experiences or varied cultural backgrounds of the students? 

3. Can the students see “themselves” in the portrayal of characters or presentation of historical figures in the materials and the curriculum?  

 

Non-bias

1. Do the materials and the curriculum contain any racial or gender stereotypes.

2. Do the materials and the curriculum contain and derogatory or discriminatory language?

3. Do the materials and the curriculum reflect the broadest possible range of human experiences, from the lived experience of ordinary people to the lives of the famous.

4. Do the materials and the curriculum contain best-practice strategies for delivering instruction to learners of varied learning modalities (i.e. Visual learners, Auditory learners, Kinesthetic learners)? 

 

Alignment to state/national standards

1. Are the curriculum and assessments aligned to State Standards, including Benchmarks and Objectives, per subject area?

2. Are the curriculum and assessments aligned to State Standards, including Benchmarks and Objectives, across grade levels?

3. Do the curriculum and the assessments provide appropriate accommodations (extended time, modified materials, etc.) for ELL learners and learning with disabilities?

 

Differentiated

1. Do the materials and the curriculum contain best-practice strategies for delivering differentiated instruction to learners through tiered assignments?

2. Do the materials and the curriculum contain best-practice strategies for delivering differentiated instruction to learners through flexible grouping?

3. Do the formal assessments for the curriculum provide targeted feedback to aid in developing differentiated instruction?
