This student resembles traits of a beginning writer. To get this student engaged in understanding of writing I would start with mini lessons. This gives the students a goal and targets within that goal to reach. I’d teach the student how to reach each target to complete the goal and then challenge that student to respond to a prompt with a short response. While that student is writing I would perform check ins to view the students progress without disturbing the writing process. I’d repeat this method until I can trust that the student understands how to reach targets and goals before moving to intermediate level of writing.
